  6. Xargon Requires:
  7.   * A 386 or faster IBM-compatible PC
  8.   * VGA graphics
  9.   * Hard disk

  12.   * Sound Blaster, SB Pro, and compatible music cards
  13.   * Joystick

  15. To start Xargon:
  16.  
  17. 1. Switch to the drive where the game is installed (C:)
  18. 2. Switch to the subdirectory where the game is installed 
  19.    (CD \XARGON)
  20. 3. Type XARGON to begin.

  24. Common problems and solutions
  25. ======================================================

  28. RUNNING WITH WINDOWS AND OS/2
  29. =============================
  30.  
  31. This game should work properly without music and sound effects under 
  32. Windows and OS/2 on most systems if you're able to free up enough main 
  33. memory.
  34.  
  35. Here are some more Windows and OS/2 tips:
  36.  
  37. 1. Under Windows or OS/2,  you may not be able to use Sound Blaster
  38.    music or sound.  This is because the Windows and OS/2 music and sound
  39.    drivers often conflict with DOS programs which use music and sound.
  40.    In order to play with music and sound,  run Xargon from DOS.
  41.  
  42. 2. If you encounter any problems running through Windows or OS/2, exit and
  43.    run Xargon through plain DOS instead!  This will likely solve any
  44.    problems you are encountering.
  45.  
  46. 3. Running Xargon through the "MS-DOS Shell" in Windows (or the
  47.    OS/2 Dos box) is NOT the same as running it straight from DOS.  For
  48.    best results, you need to completely exit from Windows or OS/2 and run
  49.    Xargon from the DOS prompt.
  50.  
  51.  
  52. RANDOM "LOCKUPS" OR CRASHES
  53. ===========================
  54.  
  55. Problem:  In the middle of a Xargon game,  my computer freezes or locks up.
  56.  
  57. Solution: Xargon is probably running into a compatibility problem with some
  58.    of your TSR's and memory managers.  We've tested Xargon with many
  59.    combinations of different DOS versions,  memory managers,  and other 
  60.    programs,  and some combinations will cause random, intermittent lockups.
  61.    To avoid this problem,  you'll need to restart your computer without
  62.    loading any of your normal TSR's and memory managers.  Skip down to the
  63.    section titled "RESTARTING YOUR COMPUTER" below for exact instructions.
  64.    
  65.  
  66. NOT ENOUGH FREE MEMORY
  67. ======================
  68.  
  69. Problem:  When I run Xargon,  the game refuses to start and gives
  70.    me the message "You need (amount) of free memory to run this program".
  71.  
  72. Solution:  You need to free up more main (conventional) memory before
  73.    starting Xargon.  Here are some solution tips:
  74.  
  75. 1. If you are trying to run Xargon from Windows, completely exit
  76.    Windows and run it from DOS.
  77.  
  78. 2. If you are trying to run Xargon from "DOSSHELL" or any other
  79.    menu program,  please exit from the menu program.  Then, run Xargon
  80.    from the DOS prompt.  Menu programs often occupy enough memory that
  81.    there won't be enough left for the game.
  82.  
  83. If neither #1 or #2 solves the problem,  do the following:
  84.  
  85. 1. From the DOS prompt,  type "MEM" and press Enter.
  86.  
  87. 2. You'll see a lot of information about your computer's memory.  Look at
  88.    the number after the words "Largest Executable Program Size".  This is
  89.    how much memory you currently have available.
  90.  
  91. Now you need to free up more main memory.  To do this,  you'll need to boot
  92. your computer without any TSR's or memory managers loaded.  Read on for
  93. instructions.
  94.  
  95.  
  96. RESTARTING YOUR COMPUTER WITH NO TSR'S OR MEMORY MANAGERS LOADED
  97. ================================================================
  98.  
  99. 1. If you're using DOS 6.0 or later,  reboot your computer by pressing
  100.    RESET or Ctrl-Alt-Del.  Wait for the message "Starting MS-DOS..." to 
  101.    come up.  Now press the [F5] key.
  102.  
  103.    This will cause DOS 6.0 to bypass all of your TSR's, memory managers,
  104.    and other programs which normally occupy main memory.
  105.  
  106.    Now change into the Xargon directory and begin the game.
  107.  
  108. 2. If you have a version of DOS earlier than 6.0:  You need to create a
  109.    "boot disk" to allow you to start your computer without loading all
  110.    the TSR's and memory managers that take away main memory.  Here's how:
  111.  
  112.    A. Put a blank disk in your A: drive and format it as a DOS disk.  (Don't
  113.       do this in your B: drive - it won't work!)  To do this, type the
  114.       following command:
  115.       
  116.       FORMAT A: /S
  117.  
  118.    B.  Wait while your computer formats the disk.
  119.    C.  Label the disk "Boot Disk" and keep it handy.  You'll need this
  120.        disk whenever you want to start Xargon.
  121.  
  122.    Now, you can reboot your computer and play Xargon:
  123.  
  124.    A.  Put the boot disk in your A: drive.
  125.    B.  Restart your computer,  either by pressing CTRL-ALT-DELETE,  by
  126.        hitting your reset button,  or by turning it on.
  127.    C.  Wait while your computer boots from the boot disk.
  128.    D.  After a little while, your computer will stop and give you the A>
  129.        prompt.
  130.    E. Now change to your hard disk by typing "C:".
  131.    F. Go into the Xargon directory by typing "CD \XARGON".
  132.    G. Begin by typing "XARGON".
  133.  
  134.    Note to owners of "Stacker", "Superstor", and other hard disk compression
  135.    programs:  If your C: drive is compressed and you need a boot disk to
  136.    start Xargon, you must install it on a different, non-compressed drive.
  137.    See your manual for instructions on doing this.  (This only applies to
  138.    users of DOS version 5.0 or earlier).
  139.  
  140. NOTE TO NEW SOUND BLASTER OWNERS
  141. ================================
  142.  
  143. Xargon and many other games will work best if your Sound Blaster-compatible
  144. card is set as follows:
  145.  
  146.    IRQ:      Either 5 or 7
  147.    ADDRESS:  220
  148.    DMA:      1
  149.  
  150. Xargon may work with other IRQ's,  but this is not guaranteed.  Some of the
  151. newer sound cards support IRQ's 10 and higher,  which may not work with
  152. Xargon.
  153.  
  154. Xargon will only recognize DMA 1.  If your sound card is set to DMA 0, 2,
  155. or 3,  Xargon will probably not detect your sound card.  The only solution
  156. it to set your card to DMA 1.
  157.  
  158.  
  159. NOTE TO PRO AUDIO SPECTRUM OWNERS
  160. =================================
  161.  
  162. Xargon should work fine with the PAS, PAS+, and PAS-16 sound cards.
  163.  
  164. Important!  To run Xargon on any Pro Audio Spectrum sound card, you
  165. need to have the PAS drivers loaded properly.  Xargon will only recognize
  166. your PAS card if the drivers are loaded.  See your PAS manual for
  167. instructions on loading the right PAS drivers in your AUTOEXEC.BAT and
  168. CONFIG.SYS files.

  171. NOTE TO GRAVIS ULTRASOUND OWNERS
  172. ================================
  173.  
  174. After working closely with several versions of the SBOS Sound Blaster
  175. emulation program,  we haven't been able to get Xargon to work reliably
  176. on the Gravis Ultrasound board.  We appologize for the lack of Ultrasound
  177. support in this game,  but we promise to have Gravis support in at least
  178. four new Epic releases in 1994,  so stay tuned!

  181. MISC NOTES
  182. ==========
  183.  
  184. Our testers have noted that running Thunderbyte Anti-Virus version 6.08 on
  185. Xargon may falsely indicate that two data files (BOARD_01.XR1 and
  186. BOARD_03.XR1) are infected.  We have looked into this in great detail and
  187. verified that Thunderbyte is incorrect.
